A favorite of bicyclists, joggers, hikers and snowmobilers this mostly limestone surfaced trail connects to a large system of other trails that begin in DeKalb at Lions Park and runs through Kane and DuPage counties almost to Chicago! This former Great Western Railroad right-of-way, the trail traverses 4 miles in DeKalb County and 14 miles into Kane County from the Sycamore Forest Preserve trail head. Along the trail there is some of the best original prairie remnants in the county; they have been used as a prairie seed source in many of forest preserve prairie restorations. The Great Western Trail Extension project now connects the Great Western Trail to the City of Sycamore and Sycamore Park District parks and trails.
